Hi Doctor,

My son is having a large sized tonsils and enlarged adrenoids. We had consulted many doctors who advised us to remove them both. He sleeps with his mouth open and has difficulty in breathing too.Kindly advice if surgery is required or not.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

A throat swab can be taken for an enlarged tonsil and if organisms isolated, antibiotic course prescribed. But if after antibiotic course administration, the condition is still not improving and clinical presentation is even worsening, like that in your child's breathing difficulty, then surely it should be removed. Consult good otorhinolaryngologist for examination and get operated for it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
