What Causes Jaw Pain When Chewing?

Thank you, doctor. 2 parts to my question. I am 75, with a few bottom teeth in front and two top teeth on each side on top. I have pain for the last two days in the front of my mouth where the top 4-6 teeth used to be :) hurts to "chew" there, and the roof of my mouth is tender, too. With a mirror and a little flashlight I saw that, except for a small red spot near the back of the roof, it was all white. I read the dialog between one of you & the 28-year-old man.
Except for some gluten crust pumpkin pie and some chocolate at a Christmas Day party, and a few sips from a friend's flask of tequila, I have been gluten-free vegetarian for a few weeks and before that gluten-free vegan, probably taking in too much raw honey. It feels to me like my third set of teeth are coming in.

Hi Dear,

welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern about health.

As per your query you have very few teeth in upper and lower anterior area and whenever you chew it causes pain and difficulty the most probable reason for that could be temporomandibular joint diseases. As you have left with few teeth and while chewing the pressure mainly spreads to muscles and ligaments and which in turn put lot of pressure on joint.

Diet which you had on Christmas day is not the cause of your problem. Tenderness on roof of mouth is also because of unequal distribution of forces and you feel like popping sound as well at times.

I would suggest you to go to near by dentist and get partial denture done for your remaining teeth with the support of anterior teeth. This will help you in better chewing and increases esthetic value. Forces will be evenly distributed then and you can eat any thing without any pain and redness.

Do mouth exercises daily to prevent locking of TMJ joint.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well soon.

Best Wishes,

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your query there may be a few reasons for the soreness and pain.

One can be that as the upper front region of your jaw has no teeth, there may be formation of bony spicules under the gums or there may be left out root pieces which must be erupting and when you wear denture to chew or you chew directly it may cause trauma to the overlying mucosa leading to pain while chewing..

Other reason can be that if you must be eating hard food stuffs they also cause trauma to the gums leading to pain and injury to the gums.

If you wear a denture and there are some sharp edges on the under surface can also lead to pain while chewing and called as Denture Soreness..

These can be a few common reason..

You should take a soft diet and if you wear denture avoid wearing a denture and see your dentist to get any sharp elevations on your denture to be corrected.

Use anaesthetic oral gels to before half an hour of taking food to prevent pain during food intake..

Use of gum paint may also be relieving..

If still you don't find relief visit a dentist to get evaluated for any underlying bony spicule or left over root pieces by taking IOPAR (xray) of those regions or any other pathology and treat accordingly..

Hope your query is solved..

Thanks and regards..
