What Causes Jaw Pain Followed By Locking Of The Jaw After Swimming?

Hello, my daughter who is 12 just started to experience pain in the right side of her jaw. It hurts when she opens her mouth and is painful when she tries to open her mouth wide she feels like her jaw is locking. It started last night after she had been swimming in an indoor private pool. she was doing dives and shooting hoops, swimming and pull ups on the dive board for approximately 2 hours. she is typically a fit, active healthy child. Should I be taking her to a medical clinic? Is this something that could be muscular from swimming excessively last night? She has never experienced this before.

Well, the symptoms are pointing towards slight dislocation in her jaw joint and can be most probably due to injury to the jaw joint due to thrust over the jaw joint caused due to diving..

It can also be due to muscle tightness..
So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a Panoramic x ray can be done to rule out the exact cause..

For now you can give her painkillers like Ibuprofen along with muscle relaxants after consulting an Emergency room..
Avoid excessive mouth opening, take soft meals and sufficient rest..
