What Causes Jaw Pain After Taking Carafate?

I have recently started taking carafate for bile reflux. I have TMJ, but since taking carafate the pain in my jaw is much, much more constant and intense. Could this be a side effect of carafate? If so, how long after I discontinue use of carafate should the side effects go away?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have jaw pain after taking Carafate. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like malocclusion ,bruxism or abnormality of TMJ . Carafate is not known to cause such side effects . I would suggest you to eat soft , apply warm compresses to TMJ and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain. If condition doesn't get well then consult dentist for proper examination . Doctor may check occlusion , may refer you to orthodontist for correction of the same , prescribe muscle relaxant , along with anti inflammatory . Doctor may also give night guard for bruxism or may refer you to oral surgeon for joint problem .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
