What Causes Itchy Red Spots On The Body While On Nitrofurantoin?

I am currently taking Nitrofurantoin for recurring UTI s, and I just started the drug about one week ago. My legs are covered in red spots that itch badly. Is this a side effect from the drug? Should I stop taking it? I have not called the doctor yet, as he is about three hours away from me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Itching and red spots are not the side effects of nitrofurantoin.

It is a type of an allergic reaction and can happen with any medicine. You need to take Fexofenadine. Please apply Caladryl lotion to the affected areas. Consult your physician if your symptoms persist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.
