General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is likely that you have post thrombotic syndrome. This is a condition that develops in many persons who had a previous clot in the leg. It can be associated with some or all of these symptoms- pain, ulcers or sores, redness, swelling. It can occur in almost half of persons with a clot. It occurs as a result of damage to the veins and the valves in the veins due to the clot. As a result there is difficulty in getting the blood in the legs back up to the heart. Treatment involves the use of compression stockings to help the blood get back up the heart. Elevation of the leg, whenever possible, would also be helpful. Wound care would be needed to help the sores/ulcers.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
