What Causes Itchy Blisters On The Lips?

I had a slice of pepperoni pizza Friday, the first in years. By that evening, just my lower lip swelled up. Thinking I'd had an allergic reaction, since it was burning and itching, I took a benedryl. The next morning, it seemed less swollen. By Sunday, it just looked like a failed botox job...

This morning, Monday, my lip is freakishly huge and I'm noticing little blisters both top and bottom lip and the itch is worse. Never had this before, what should I do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain it seems that symptoms of swelling of lips and itchy blisters which subsided with anti-allergic like Benadryl but recurred can be due to Allergic reaction causing Allergic Angioedema of lips.

Yes, it can be due to any of the ingredients of the Pizza or it can be due to any other food or medication while other causes can be an allergic reaction to any skin cosmetic, soap, and lip balm.

I would suggest you consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests for allergies like RAST TEST, Patch test, Food Challenge test can help in ruling out the exact cause of the symptoms and treat accordingly.

As of now take anti-allergics like Levocetirizine. Do cool compresses over the lips. You can be advised injectable steroids and antihistamines to reduce swelling.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
