What Causes Itching And Swelling In Scrotum?

I scratch my scrotum here and there when its itchy, but this time my balls kept on being itchy, so i would continue to scratch. Now the scrotum is swollen in the areas that i have been scratching heavily. I have stopped scratching and used a cod compress to relieve the itchyness. Im wondering if i just scratched to much and it swelled up or if something else is the cause?

Hello,

You have been having itching in the scrotum. Continuously scratching has caused swelling of the scrotum. The cause of such symptoms is poor hygiene, sweating, wearing dirty clothes. Medical conditions like ring worm, fungal infection, jock itch and STDs like genital herpes, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. You should take care of your hygiene, wear cotton clothes, wash your clothes and bedding in hot water. Change your clothes regularly. Avoid sex for a couple of days, avoid multiple partners and always perform safe sex.

You can apply ointment Clotrimazole (Lotrimin AF) in the area affected. Do not touch or scratch. You can take antihistamine at bed time and a course of anti-fungals orally for relief. To get rid of swelling take acetaminophen, one SOS when discomfort. However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get STD tests done. If reports are positive you may need antibiotics and antivirals.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
