What Causes Itching And Burning Sensation Around The Eyes?

Hi. I have had repeated episodes of long-lasting redness, roughness, and burning and itchiness around both eyes, starting in the outer corners where tears seem to irritate the skin, but progressing all the way up to the brows as the days progress. i have been given tobradex ointment several times over a couple of years to deal with this. Nothing else helps- elimination of all facial creams, etc. I use a cetaphil to wash face. The tobradex does work quickly and i do it for a few days, but don t like using a steroid long-term like this, and i worry it could affect pressure in eyes.. After a week or more following ending the tobradex, the whole thing starts up again slowly. Docs do not feel i have an infection. Eyes themselves are ok. It is the skin surrounding the eyes, which causes a raccoon-like redness around both eyes. It is a post-menopausal changing of the skin? i am 57. Could it be a fungal infection of the skin, on both eyelids? Dermatologist and ophthalmologist last August did not feel it looked fungal, but no culture was taken. Please let me know what you think. Thank you. LM

Hi,

It looks more like allergic dermatitis due to an unknown allergen as the fungal infection is already eliminated as the cause. So my suggestion is to consult the skin specialist or an immunologist again and get evaluated, specifically when then there is an outbreak.

An allergy test and microscopy of the scrapings from the lesions can be done for confirmation. For now you can apply Tobradex and can also apply Caladryl lotion for relief. You can apply Petroleum jelly to lubricate the skin. Aloe vera gel can also help in providing the soothing feeling. Drink plenty of water and avoid oily and spicy foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
