What Causes Ischial Bursitis?

I have been suffering from what a Physiatrist says is ischial bursitis. I have had it since 6/21/16. I woke up in pan that brought me to my knees. I have had 2 1/2 months of run around with insurance, cortisone inj., with no relief, PTherapy, acupuncture, and deep muscle message. I am quickly going down hill and also loosing my muscles in my legs, can barely hold my weight climbing stairs. It hads been a fight with Ins co. etc. I finally after many phone calls etc. had an MRI approve this past Tuesday. I do not know which way to turn. I am 61 year old female and really cannot do a thing ,reaching, bending walking, any movement send excrutiating pain down both legs. I am afraid to do anything until my MRI results. It is affecting my everyday life functions. I am afraid to do PT right now for fear of something other than ischial bursitis. Will my MRI show the severity of this pain?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Since the pain is going through both the lower limbs and is severe enough not allowing to do daily chores the reason can be more than ischial bursitis.
The problem can be in the lower spine, prolapsed discs, lumbar canal stenosis and so on.
Hence it is the MRI of the lower spine and pelvic area that will give a proper diagnosis.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an Orthopedic Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, examination so that which are to be scanned can be decided not to miss the diagnosis.
Till then take a complete bed rest as straining too much may increase the problem in absence of a definitive diagnosis.
Take a proper dose of anti-inflammatory medications with painkiller properties.
Relax, avoid stress and anxiety as these lead to muscle spasms and enhance the symptoms.
Further management will depend upon the clinical findings as well as the report of MRI of the affected area.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
