What Causes Irregular Periods?

I started my period this morning but I have been skipping months for last couple years. My Obgyn, put me on progesterone last year. But , it only helped for the 7 days I was on it. My question is could I be perimenopausal? Also this month my bleeding is thick and very dark like almost black, is this a problem?

Hello, Thanks for the query.
Progesterone is usually given along with estrogen to regularize menstrual cycle and also as a contraceptive (birth control pill). In a woman's life during the menstruating age some time or the other irregularity in menstrual cycles does occur. So to correct that phase these drugs are used. However, in the later years that is close to 45 to 50 years irregularity may be more pronounced as menopause is nearing. Even in pre -menopausal period such things are noticed. Since there is no mention of the age, it is difficult to comment. Thanks.
