What Causes Irregular Periods?

Hello my name is Olivia. I have been having issues with my period. Well at first it was normal and then it would go months with out coming. I thought something was wrong with me, but now I have it to frequent like I ll have it for a whole week and it would go away but sometimes would last longer maybe even another week. when it goes away, occasionally blood will come out,but then it stops. Then after I get my period maybe a week later or hopefully two it would come back again. Which worries me because it seems that s way to fast for it to come back. Especially cause it sometimes happens twice a month.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Your symptoms indicate a hormonal imbalance.

I recommend :
- an OBGYN consult
-an ultrasound abdomen to check ovarian cysts and Polycystic ovaries
-blood tests (complete blood count, Thyroid profile, estradiol, leutenizing hormone, follicle stimulation hormone, prolactin levels, androgen levels)

Based on your symptoms, I would like to rule out thyroid hormone imbalances and Polycystic ovaries.

Would you please clarify a few things for me?
-Do you have a family history of similar issues?
-what is your height and weight?
-how old are you?
-is the bleeding (that happens twice a month) bright red?

Based on the above tests results, clinical exam and answers to the above queries, I could help you further.
I urge you to consult your OBGYN asap.
Irregular periods, especially when they were regular to start with is not normal and should be evaluated as soon as possible.

A delayed period once in a while is common and normal but when it continues and become this frequent, it can lead to anemia.
Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
