Hi,

Let me first sort out your pregnancy test issue. The description of the appearance of red line is not clear. What I gather from your narration is that the red line appears faint. If I am correct, it means that the pregnancy test is weak positive. Weak positive pregnancy test can be due to:

1. Pregnancy test done too early, that is within few days of missed period. If so, please repeat the test after 4 days again.

2. Ectopic pregnancy wherein the pregnancy is implanted somewhere outside the uterine cavity, mostly the tube. Such pregnancy cannot grow and subsequently ruptures causing bleeding emergency which the needs emergency surgical intervention and many units of blood transfusion.

If diagnosed before rupture, the condition can be managed conservatively by medicines or minimally invasive surgery. Please report to your gynaecologist ASAP. If you are not pregnant, the irregularity in the menses could be due to:

1. Thyroid dysfunction. Thyroid function test (T3,T4, TSH) can diagnose this. Depending upon the type of dysfunction, you will need the treatment.

2. Reproductory hormonal imbalance which includes Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Blood examination for FSH, LH, Oestrogen, Progesterone and Prolactin can clinch the diagnosis. Ultrasonography is very useful in detecting PCOS. Such imbalances can usually be corrected by cyclical use of oral birth control pills for few months.

3. Stress of changed atmosphere after marriage is known to cause menstrual irregularities. Compose yourself. Affectionate and empathising support from husband will help you get out of this stress. Please report to your gynecologist. Do not take any hormonal treatment over the counter.

I hope this offers you guidelines to plan your treatment. Let me know if I can assist you further.
