What Causes Irregular Menstruation After Removing IUD?
Hello Doc. A sister of mine used the IUD family planing method for about 2 years. She had it removed last july and her monthly period came back to normal. However, by November, the mentruation became irregular and sometimes with spoting. A pelvic scan carried out revealed there was no cyesis, but a myeoma of about 40mm was detected. I asked her to go for a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy before placing her on appropriate medication to correct the irregular menstruation. Please what do you advise. Thanks
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Irregularities in the menstrual cycle can be due to hormonal disturbances like hypothyroidism, hyperprolactemia or polycystic ovarian disease. IUD has no role to play in menstrual cycle after its removal, if it was not medicated. Pregnancy should be ruled out before further investigation and treatment. I would suggest her to consult an OBGYN specialist to get properly examined, investigated including hormonal profile and ultrasound and get appropriate treatment. Hope you found the answer helpful. Wishing you good health. Dr Deepti Verma
