What Causes Inverted Papilloma?

Hi, My husband is having inverted palpilloma. Doctor sent it for biopsy and results said it is benign. His surgery is scheduled next month to remove it. My question is 1) Is inverted palpilloma dangerous? 2) What is the recovery time after the surgery?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Inverted papilloma is a benign epithelial growth in the underlying stroma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

The pathogenesis of this lesion remains unclear although allergy, chronic sinusitis and viral infections have been suggested as possible causes.

Inverted papillomas are noncancerous tumors. Surgery is the primary treatment for inverted papillomas.

Because of the high recurrence rate (40 to 80 percent), early, aggressive surgery to remove the papilloma usually is recommended.

IP can be treated both with internal and external approaches. The type of surgery should be determined according to the tumor stage.

Recovery time after the surgery depends on the staging and surgical approach used.

Combined internal and external approaches have fewer recurrence rates in advanced cases. Endoscopic endonasal resection should be used in early-stage tumors.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
