What Causes Intermenstrual Bleeding?

Hi, I was on the DEPO shot for two rounds ( I only got two shots, one every 3 months.) It took me about 6 months to start my period after the last shot I took, finally, it started. I would have some brown discharge now and again but I know it is normal and a common side effect from this BC. This month I have my period for about 7 days. Ended normally and had a perfectly clear week. Then I woke up to some brown discharge, feeling unalarmed I put on a panty liner and continued my day. Later on, I noticed some red blood and clotting. As the day progressed I find myself with heavy bleeding, slight stomach cramps and lethargic. Should I be worried about this heavy second period? What could it be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

This can be related to the depot shots as hormones tend to alter the menstrual cycle causing less or heavy bleeding or intermittent bleeding which is generally observed and can get back to normal after some time.Although, other causes need to be ruled out. I suggest you visit your gynecologist for better evaluation.

Along with physical examination there might be need of ultrasound lower abdomen done, to look for any structural abnormality. As well as blood tests if needed your doctor will advice. Depending on the underlying cause, you will be advised proper management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
