What Causes Intermenstrual Bleeding Despite Being On Birth Control Pills?

I am on birth control. I had unprotected sex about a week ago, and my partner pulled out . I was on antibiotics, which I hear can make birth control ineffective. The day after I started spotting and getting cramps like I was on my period. I had my actual period about a week before I had intercourse, so this was not normal. I am still spotting and now am starting to feel nauseous. Could I be pregnant?

Hello,

Your menstrual cycle is protected if you are regular with your pill. Moreover, intercourse seems to have happened during the safe period, should ovulation occur, so, there is no need to worry. The cause of this spotting could be due to the hormone release during the act, rough intercourse, local causes like infections, erosions, polyps etc. which call for a local examination. Please see your doctor for further information. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
