What Causes Inter Menstrual Vaginal Spotting?

Dear doctor, I have been experiencing some out of the ordinary spotting between my periods. I usually have longer periods, about 35 days and the previous one was slightly late. Right now, I would say that somewhere around ovulation time (but I might be wrong) I had some blood ,about a spoonful, come out. I thought my period was starting, but it was just this one time occurrence. After that I have had dark brown spotting for a couple of days and at times if I have a bowel movement and strain it will happen too. The quantity is not large, just a smudge on the toilet paper when I wipe. At times a spot of light red blood also appears when I wipe after peeing. I am not experiencing any pain, but I think my stomach is bloated and it has been like this for about 2 days. I should get my period in 3 days. I addition I think it might be helpful to mention that 2 times now I experienced serious bloating and some nausea, I think around ovulation time, but I thought it was something I ate, now I am not so sure. What do you think could be the problem? Additionally: -pap smear - I have had a pap smear taken 1 year ago and it was good, and I also had it taken 2 weeks ago, I suppose that one is also good since they havent called me about any irregularities. -physical check up - I had a regular physical check-up and my doctor told me everything looked fine - Ultrasound - maybe a few months ago I had a very painful ovulation so I went for a check up and the doctor said everything looked fine and one folicle seemed a little bit enlarged though so it was probably the cause of the pain. -facial hair - I have always had some facial hair as well as hair on my lower back - if this helps

Hi,

When bleeding occurs for a longer period than it is usually as in your case then there are few possible causes and most common is a hormone imbalance.

PCOS is one of the causes of hormonal imbalance. While some causes may be easy to treat, others can indicate a serious underlying condition.

Whether you notice spotting or heavier bleeding in between periods, it’s important to see your doctor for testing, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Other potential other causes of bleeding between periods include a growth in the uterus or cervix, stress, change in medications, miscarriage, vaginal dryness.

Your doctor will also likely give you a physical exam, including a pelvic exam.

Diagnostic tests can help your doctor find the cause of the bleeding. Your doctor may draw blood to check hormone levels. Then the right treatment can be recommended.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
