Hi there,

If you usually have very regular periods, and you are sexually active, I would strongly suggest that you do a urine pregnancy test. This is because from what you have described, your previous periods on the 16th of September was shorter than usual, and this could have been an implantation bleeding, or basically a false period when you get pregnant. The reason we need to make sure you are not pregnant is because the current bleed could be a sign of a miscarriage, and you could bleed a great deal later on.

If the pregnancy test is negative, then we can wait and see. A single episode of irregular periods can be due to stress or diet or simply temporary hormone fluctuations. When to seek help with your local doctor:

1. Excessively heavy bleeding with clots, or stomach pains. This is important to make sure there is not too much blood loss, or to make sure that it wasn't a false negative pregnancy test.

2. You continue to have intermenstrual spotting after the current one resolves. Your doctor will need to have a look at your cervix and uterus to look for any source of bleeding that is the cause.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
