Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is 14 years old and started taking sertraline Thursday which as of today would be her sixth dose. She had problems sleeping last two nights and also seemed to be more overwhelmed with depression . Is this normal and should she remain on the medicine .?
Insomnia is a common side effect of anti depressants such as Sertraline. In children it is best to try conservative treatments for insomnia such as a warm bath before bed, no electronic device use or TV watching an hour before bed, lavender oil on the pillow.
Anti-depressants usually cause worsening of depressive symptoms for the first 2 weeks after initiation of therapy with subsequent improvement of symptoms. If you are still worried after 2 weeks then it is best to see your prescribing doctor again.
Hope this helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Raboobee
