What Causes Insomnia After Receiving Kenalog Injection?

Hi, thanks. I had an injection of Kenalog (cortisone) about 48 hours ago into my hip joint, guided by ultrasound. The past two nights I have barely slept, just lying there in wakefulness, and this morning I had a red flush across the part of my cheeks nearer to my nose and across the bridge of my nose. No itching, no other symptoms that I can tell. The injection is supposed to last between 4-6 months or even up to a year (it s the first I ve ever had). I called my doc s office and an assistant got back to me and told me the doctor said I was likely allergic to the medication and to take Benadryl. While that might get me some sleep tonight, I want to understand how strong of an allergic reaction this is ... and when I can expect normal sleep to return, and what it means to be allergic to something that is going to linger in my hip joint for a long, long time. I don t want to take diphenhydramine every night for the foreseeable future, and I don t know how long this type of allergic reaction should last. Also, if I take no medication, what else can I do to help my body process its response (besides drinking a lot of water). I m hoping to speak to my doc tomorrow, but this was the only answer I ve gotten so far to the question I ve left him with. Thanks for your help!

Hello. Just went through your problem.
First of all I will try to make you understand about the insomnia you suffered from, after taking CORTISONE.
Cortisone reduces the inflammation and helps the body with freedom of movement. The steroid lasts only a short time in the body as it is released into the blood stream and must travel to the location of the inflammation.

Now a question must be going on in your mind if It frees the body from inflammation then why does it cause insomnia?
The answer to this is that The adrenal glands are responsible for regulating the fight or flight response in the body. As too much stress can keep the body awake by exhausting the adrenal glands, so too can an injection of cortisone. This side effect keeps the body awake and the mind stimulated all the time and when synthetic cortisone is injected, it begins to work immediately and can help the affected area for weeks, but the byproduct associated with insomnia typically only last 48 hours.

Thanks
