What Causes Inflammation On The Hands, Elbows And Knees?

I had blood work done to see why I have so much inflammation in my hands, elbows and knees. The SED rate was 36 and I am 63 yrs old. My pain is more during the night and I have been taking anti-inflammation meds but doesn t work. What can it be? I have an apt to see a rheumatologist this coming week. Thank you, Rosemary

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern,
Inflammation of joints(hands, elbows, knees ) with some rise in SED rate, seem to be rheumatoid arthritis.
The pain in nights typically points to gout ( where inflammation & red joints are seen )
Where anti inflammatory drugs do not relieve.. the inflammation is more fierce & needs change of medications .. steroids ( in joint/ oral )/ specific drugs for gout will be needful.
It's good that you have apt with rheumatologist.. specific blood tests would pin point the cause & specific medicines would give you relief.
Thanks
