What Causes Inflammation In The Belly Button?

Hi,

My belly button is red, and enflamed inside (although nothing looks out of sorts from the exterior). When I looked inside there were small white dots around the red area and a slight smell, but no discharge. I've been looking around the internet and every other case of this seems to occur with discharge, so I'm not sure if maybe this is something else. I've had this happen once or twice before and simply washed it out, dried it and applied a bit of hydrogen peroxide and it seems to go away. However, the fact that it keeps coming back makes me wonder if I need to get it looked at or of it's just something that will happen from time to time throughout my life. I am female, 22 years old, 5 foot 3 inches, and 135 pounds. I have no serious medical conditions and am simply looking for a bit of advice.

Thank you

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain it seems like infection at the belly button site leading to formation of small pustules and redness and inflammation..
It occurs commonly as the belly button site is many a times left out uncleaned and there is more of accumulation moisture and debris and it causes bacterial accumulation..
Nothing to worry, you can clean the area with betadine solution and apply a combination of antibiotic ointment and steroid ointment..
You can also do cool compresses..
In case if infection does not subside you can get a course of oral antibiotics under supervision of a physician..
You should keep the area dry and clean..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
