What Causes Inflammation Around An Injection Site?

I received the shingles vaccine on Monday. Today is Thursday. From the injection site down the back of my arm, I have a raised, red area that is 5 in length and 1 wide that is hot and irritated. I have been unable to sleep for the past 2 nights due to pain from this area. Is this a normal reaction?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

No this is not normal and this may be either a hypersensitive allergic reaction or wound infection and the site of vaccination. Since this is large and painful it is most likely infection and you need to apply cold compress on eat and take amoxicilin tablets or topical antibiotic cream such as muciprocin. If there will be pus secretion or fever then you need to see doctor. But in most cases it should subside on this recommended therapy within 1 week. You need to also take some nonsteroid painkiller such as ibuprofenum 400mg. for few days.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
