What Causes Infectious Wound After Melanoma Biopsy?
Infection in postage stamp sized area where a melanoma biopsy was taken. Initially treated with bacitracin but infection set in and after 7 days wound was oozing and painful. Treatment was then started with 500mg Cephalexin twice daily. Now after 3 days there is no reduction in swelling or pain. How long should I wait to see if this medication approach is working. Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As per your case history, you are having biopsy site infection. My treatment advice is :
1. Don't scratch the lesion as it may worsen the condition. 2. Apply a mild antibiotic cream like fusiderm cream twice daily on it. 3. Take an NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen. 4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics like levofloxacin, cefadroxil, and azithromycin taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
