What Causes Impaired Hearing And A Covering On Ear Drum?

My ear had been plugged for nearly 3 months severely affecting my hearing. I would take a bath and the water never seemed to come out. Never once, did I have this problem before. I had recently began taking a medication for depression and I thought the ear changes were due to that so I stopped it. I just had a rudimentary work physical at a clinic, and the doctor told me to make an appointment with my doctor. There is something in my ear. Its white and covers my ear drum..what could it be? I have no pain

Hi,

Ear plugging for 3 months is a long time to have no proper diagnosis although you have been told by someone about some white material on ear drum. The most probable causes as per your history are one of the following:
- White layering fungus
- Wax
- Foreign body like cotton from ear bud
- Middle ear infection that caused dried up pus flake

Hence, I would advise you the following as the treatment may differ a bit from cause to cause.
- Consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, examination by endoscope to know the exact diagnosis
- Anti-fungal drops with cleaning if there is fungus
- Removal wax if present
- Pus culture and sensitivity if there is pus
- Course of an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and decongestant
- Once the cause is found the treatment would be specific and effective

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
