What Causes Hypothyroidism?

I'm a 35 year old female. I've been feeling sickly and weak for years. I've recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism with a TSH of 19.140. My mother, sister, and great grandmother all have/had hypothyroidism. I'm wondering, since it seems to be hereditary, does that mean that I/we have Hashimoto's disease? I'm also wondering if I could have had hypothyroidism for years, but it hasn't shown up on any TSH in the past? I'm also wondering how they figure out where exactly the hypothyroidism is coming from.
Thanks, Kim

Hello,
Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.
From your family history I see that are affected from hypothyroidism all the women member of your family, you are a female and have a high level of TSH, you have right your hypothyroidism cause is Hashimoto diseases.
Hashimoto disease is an autoimmune disease that means the immune system produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland, causing a disability on production of thyroid hormones. It has genetic component, it affect more women than male.
If you had been affected year before you detected hypothyroidism, yes it happen because Hashimoto symptoms are mild for the first time and similar to symptoms of other medical condition and also it has been shown appear at middle age women more commonly than in other age .
You should take the replacement hormonal therapy and monitor the dosage of this therapy by TSH blood level to avoid the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Kind regard,
Dr .Marsida Janko
