What Causes Horseshoe Shaped Rash On The Back Of Knee?
I am a 61 year old woman. Healthy and active. I live in the mid-west. Work full time. 3 days ago I woke up with a hot horseshoe shaped rash on the back of my knee. It itched a tiny bit ... that s how I noticed it. but not much. If it was a full circle it would be about 4or 5 inches across. But its not a full circle. the middle is normal. I put Benadryl cream on it. Its not as bright red, but still very much there. No pimples in it, but it is raised. Any idea what it could be?
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Judging from your description and location of the rash, I would keep a possibility of Fungal Infection/ Tinea. Fungal infections usually affect the body folds and they may start out as small lesions which later on extend peripherally with central clearing thus resembling an annular lesion. The margin is usually red, raised and scaly. Itching is a feature of fungal infections. If I was the treating doctor I would have asked you to use an OTC topical antifungal e.g clotrimazole 1% cream, twice daily. An OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine would provide you symptomatic relief from itching.
However, If the condition does'nt improve as expected, you may visit a dermatologist for a review of diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
