What Causes Hoarseness In Voice And Excessive Weight Loss?

My 80 year old mother in law smokes and drinks alcohol. Over the past year, her voice has become increasingly hoarse. At this point, she can only speak in a hoarse whisper. She also has lost a lot of weight. We can t get her to see a doctor. She hasn t been to a doctor in 6 or 7 years. I am worried she has lung cancer, throat cancer, or a very serious degree of COPD. Which is the more likely diagnosis and what suggestions do you have to help us get her to see a doctor.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,

Progressive hoarseness of voice in an elderly smoker with weight loss indicates the possibility of lung cancer or laryngeal cancer.

In case it is lung cancer there is little chance for long survival provided cancer can be resected with adequate healthy margin.

You need to inform her that she is a very serious condition and without paying a visit to a doctor can cost her life.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ashok Kumar, Psychiatrist
