What Causes High Ldl Levels?

Hi! I am 29 years old, overweight, do not smoke or drink. My parents do not have any cholestrol. My triglyceride is 95, hdl is 43 and ldl is 174. My doctor says that, if I don't reduce my ldl in 4 months she may give me a low dose of cholestrol medicine. What may be the reason that my ldl is high? I weigh 149 lb. Is it because of this?

Hello,
Your LDL levels should be below 100 and HDLs above 50. I suggest you decrease fats in your diet, specifically saturated fat and trans fat. Both will raise your LDLs. Replace these bad fats with sources of omega-3 fatty acids such as virgin olive oil. No fried foods, high fat foods; choose low-fat options. Increase water soluble fiber to assist in flushing bad cholesterol out by increasing oat fiber, Metamucil (psyllium fiber), the skin of fruits and legumes. HDLs are best increased by exercise that causes you to breathe deeply. You mentioned your wt, but not your ht. Please keep your wt below the BMI of 25 for your age. !. Increase fiber 2. Decrease overall fat intake and eliminate trans fat cut down on saturated fat use virgin olive oil; 3. Exercise 150 minutes per week; 5.Lose weight if needed I hope this gets you started back on the road to health.
