What Causes High Blood Sugar Levels?

Last year my A1C was 6.9. I tested my blood glucose at my neighbors house the other day and my blood sugar was 157! I had just drank a medium sized sugary iced coffee. I am an RN and did do it correctly. I checked it again an hour after lunch and was 133. Do you think that I am becoming a Type II Diabetic? I am 49 and about 60 lbs overweight.

Hello there,
From your last year's reading of A1c of 6.9 I would say you had diabetes from then itself (Assuming that your hemoglobin levels were normal). Now you doing this blood sugar testing randomly is not going to tell us much. For a confirmed diagnosis of diabetes please get and OGTT done. If fasting is more than 125 and after glucose load is more than 199 then you are diabetic. A1c levels when done in a standardised way, if more than 6.5 are enough for diagnosing diabetes. Till then reduce your sugars in diet and follow a regular exercise pattern.
Take care.

Diabetologist Dr. M. Vamsi Krishna's  Response
Dear madam i can understand your concern
in my opinion as per the latest American diabetes association criteria.
Hba1c% more than 6.5% is considered as diabetic but there are exceptions for this rule like Anemia and blood discariasis.
Since you are over weight and age above 49 yrs i suggest you to check 75 gms oral glucose tolerance testing for ruling out diabetes.
this is a gold standard testing for detection of diabetes and pre diabetes.
hope it answers your query.
regards
