What Causes High HCG Levels?

Yes, I am 54 years old and I had a complete hysterectomy on Sept. 2. Before the surgery, my blood work came back with high HCG level. Positive pregnancy but I was not so had the surgery as scheduled. Two weeks after surgery more blood work was done and the HCG level is still high. Went back last week for more blood work and got the results yesterday and it s still high. It has not dropped any. What could cause this?

Hi,

High level of HCG indicates many reasons. Most common is pregnancy but it's not in your case. Second thing is pituitary HCG may be high. But it's not that easy to diagnose. Certain cancer mostly gestational trophoblastic tumor also causes high HCG levels. So if you have hysterectomy then we can exclude that option and HCG will be back to normal within 2 months of hysterectomy. But don't forget to rule out malignancy in other organs if it was a gestational trophoblastic tumor.
