What Causes Heavy Periods With Blood Clots While Having Uterine Fibroids?

Approximately 12 years to date I was informed that I have uterine fibroids. In the last six months I have been having heavy periods. The last period been over three weeks...tapering into small clots. Let me know if this is normal for a person with fibroids.

I can understand your concern. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the wall of the uterus. As you were not having symptoms due to their presence, it was fine for them to stay in your uterus without treatment for 12 years.

However, as you are experiencing long and heavy menstrual cycles, it is time the fibroids need to be treated. You should consult your gynecologist for the physical examination and further investigations to determine the current status of the fibroids. You might need to go for Ultrasonography for that. The management may include hormone replacement therapy, embolization or removal of the uterus by surgery depending on the severity of the fibroids that the test results will show.
