What Causes Heavy Bleeding And Fainting After Taking Misoprostol?

Hi, I was diagnosed with a missed miscarriage about over a week ago. I was 6 weeks pregnant at that stage. I went to the early pregnancy clinic to talk to a doctor. They prescribed me Misoprostol to take that day, and it s been over a week and I m not sure if the fetus has come out. I have been bleeding heavily and passing large blood clots. I was in hospital a couple of days ago as I was bleeding quite alot of blood and I nearly fainted in the toilet. I m still bleeding heavily on and off and still passing clots quite often. Is this normal? Can you please give me some advice on what to do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Mam,
Your actual medical condition requires more evaluation since it seems that you are still bleeding heavily with blood clots.
In your case an ultrasound to evaluate the uterine cavity is required to look for retained products of conception. And since you already tried medical management of missed abortion with misoprostol but the bleeding peristed to be heavy and in case there is still products of conception in the uterus then dilation and curettage is indicated.
Of course a complete blood count is also required ( CBCD ) to look for anemia due to the severe bleeding. Type and screen is needed for two reasons : 1- to prepare blood in case you need it due to anemia 2- to see if you are rhesus negative and in case your husband is rhesus positive to take the anti-Rh antibodies (rhogam).

Your current medical condition should be managed seriously, and shouldn't delay at all since severe complications can happen due to severe bleeding.
Best regards and get well soon
