What Causes Heart Palpitations?

Hello, I have been having heart palpitations for years. I am 32 otherwise healthy female. I have had a holter monitor, several ekgs, chest xray, echocardiogram, several visits to ermeg and the results have been fine. I cannot seem to just relax about them even though I have been assured time and time again that all is fine with my heart. There is no rhyme or reason for the palpitations most of the time. Sometimes, when I have indigestion, I will get them, but the palpitations are different in different senarios. eg. nervous palpitations, indigestion palpitations, PMS palpitaions and then...there are those that I cannot really understand why I am getting them. How can I just ignore them? Are they more of a nuisance or should i be really concerned. Is it possible to have heart palps/flutters in a normal heart??? Thank you!

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

Given the repeated normal tests you refer I do not see a cause for worry, heart structural abnormalities have been excluded by those tests.

I would add thyroid function tests to the list of possible causes, but I suspect the doctors must have had some blood tests to exclude it given the repeat evaluations you've had.

It is a common issue which often in the presence of normal tests is related to anxiety, so I would consider anxiety treatment through psychotherapy or medication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Olsi Taka, Neurologist
