What Causes Heart Palpitations While Sleeping?

Hi. Several nights a week (well, 1 to 3), as I m lying in bed trying to get to sleep, or am half-asleep or asleep, my heart seems to jolt suddenly, and I am wakened and sometimes my whole body jerks somewhat from the jolt. Is this something I should see a doctor about, or is it a common event that I don t need to worry about? I m about 40 lbs. overweight, but my heart rate and blood level are good and I have no other health issues. I m a 57-year-old woman. Thanks for your help.

Hello there and thank you for using HCM. I carefully read your question and I understand your concern. Don't worry, I will try to explain you something and give you some advises.
As you describe, my opinion is that we are dealing with a heart rhythm issue . It is difficult to tell what is exactly. You may feel that your heart is jumping for different reasons.
It may be a simple tachycardia. It means that your heart beats exeeds 100 beat for minute. It may happen for many reasons to simple emotional stress to other different pathologist.
There may be a different rhythm problem. If your heart is beating too fast and in a chaotic way, not rhythmic, it may be what we call atrial fibrillation.
If you feel like skipping a beat, it may be an ekstrasystol. These are ectopik beats that generate from any part of the heart different from normal rhythm. They make you fill like a beat is skipped and this awakes you at night.
So, if I was your treating doctor I will recommend you some simple examinations. Beginning with a blood analyze, an electrocardiogram and an echo cardiography. All sow I will recommend a holter monitoring to register and see what happens with your rhythm.
If you feel that your heart is beating in a chaotic way. it is advisable to make an electrocardiogram in that exact moment to your nearest cardiologist.
In mean time avoid coffee and caffeine products because they exacerbate this symptoms.
So, you should not worry, but as you are over 50 years old and this is afecting your normal daily live i will advise you to make this simple cardiac chek up.
When we document and see what kind of a rhythm problem is this we can talc about treatment.
Hope I was helpful. Wish you good health.
Best Regards
