What Causes Hearing Loss After Taking Sertraline?

Hi, I have been taking sertraline for about 4 months for anxiety and depression. I have noticed that my hearing is not as good as before and my teenage children were surprised that I could not hear a party next door that they thought was loud. I had a basic hearing test and it showed that I had lost a lot of the upper register and was moderate hearing loss in other registers. The audiologist looked in my ears and said I had dull eardrums. I occasionally get sore ears especially the left, but I ignore it as it is not bad. Do you think the antidepressants are causing this issue? I don t really want to change medication and I am not ready to come off it. Should I get checked out by my GP?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

There are some medications that cause hearing loss but sertraline is not one of these medications.
It is not likely contributing to this problem

Dull ear drums are sometimes an indicator of infection in the ears so you may need a course of oral or topical antibiotics.
Your GP can prescribe this for you. If there is no improvement then you may need to consider seeing an ENT doctor for assessment.

I hope this helps
