What Causes Headaches During Bowel Movements?

When i have a bowel movement, i get intense pain in the back of my head. The pain in head causes nausea and also some pain in lower bowels causes nausea. The pain and nausea go away when the bowel movement ends. This happens sporadically but more and more. What connection does a bowel movement have to do with intensely tbrobbing pain in my head? I might add that i am not constipated when this happens nor do i strain.

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
As you do Valsalva (forced expiration with closed glottis) during defeaction to increase intra-abdominal pressure , the venous return from head and neck is also imapired and consequently raises the intra-cranial venous pressure by causing congestion of cerebral veins and cause headache.
Along with the bowel movement, intrathoracic pressure drops with normalization of venous return to heart.
You need to undergo Fundoscopy without delay.
