What Causes Headache After Hitting With A Hockey Stick?

My son got hit in the head, on the crown, twice in a row with a hockey stick. He was wearing a street hockey goalie mask and the impacts were slightly dissapated by the mask. But he stumbled after he was hit the second time. He is now fine. No sensitivity to light or sound. No dizzyness. He can look down. Pupils are dilating. A slight residual headache. He did 25 deep knee beds, 25 jumping jacks and 10 pushups then 25 more jumping jacks without feeling sick. i even made him look at the light overhead. I havee done what I can but Should I proceed now to get him checked for a concussion?

Hi,

It sounds as though your son had a mild concussion from the impact. These can really occur after even mild trauma. We generally gauge these based on neurological symptoms and presence of a headache after the impact as well as time to resolution of the symptoms. He would meet the criteria for a mild concussive event. It sounds like his is doing fine right now, which is certainly a relief. Typically we would ask him to stay away from sports for a period of time after the event but it appears he is doing well.

If it ever happens again and he appears with any type of coordination problem and a headache, then definitely ask him to stop playing for at least an hour and if the symptoms do not resolve take him to an ER. Not the ER would be able to do much, but we generally would perform a CT scan of the head and observe him for several hours.
