What Causes Haemoptysis And Recurrent Episodes Of Bronchitis?

What questions would you ask the patient to help you establish a cause for the haemoptysis in this case? and why

A 68 year old man has problems with:

• Angina
•Claudication (calf pain on walking more than short distances/upstairs)
•Chronic cough productive of white sputum (for much of the year over many years)
•Recurrent episodes of acute bronchitis

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Most common cause for hemoptysis is bronchitis and lung infection.
Since this man is having recurrent acute bronchitis, this is the likely cause for hemoptysis.
So consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system, chest x ray and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
Chest x ray is needed to rule out lung infection.
PFT will tell you about severity of bronchitis because treatment of bronchitis is based on severity only.
He may need higher antibiotic, inhaled bronchodilators (formoterol or salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (budesonide or fluticasone).
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to that man. Thanks.
