What Causes Glaucoma While Having Multiple Sclerosis?

Hi I am a 49 year old female and I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when I was 14 years old. I have a relapsing remitting M.s. Recently, I was diagnosed with glaucoma ( normal pressure ) and the doctor suspects the cause of it is my M.S. is that possible? What can I do about it? Thank you, inga

Hello,

A direct causal relationship between MS and glaucoma are controversial although many overlapping mechanisms between optic neuropathy caused by both conditions are recognized. Increased pressure in the eye could be an indirect cause of MS if it causes uveitis to occur within the eye which is an inflammatory condition of the parts of the eye that can then, escalate pressure. Your doctor should do or send you to have done a detailed optic nerve morphological study to better distinguish whether they are looking at MS optic neuropathy or glaucoma optic neuropathy. Action will highly depend on knowing as precisely as possible what is causing the elevation in pressures.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi
