What causes furrows on tongue to appear? I have had a lingering virus (started with severe headache and onoging cough of several weeks) - know other people who have had same symptoms: It seems to be "going around". Now I have developed furrows on my tongue, mainly down midline but with some branches off it.
The furrows over the tongue seems to be due to a conditions known as Fissured tongue and it is not due to viral infection but it is generally genetic in origin..
It may also be seen in individuals who have geographic tongue , down's syndrome.
You do not need any specific treatment for it and the only thing you should do is to maintain a good oral hygiene, use a soft toothbrush to clean your tongue,do warm saline gargles..
Treatment of cough can be done with taking cough expectorants, throat lozenges, warm saline gargles and anti-allergics..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
