My 93 yr old mother goes to the bathroom as many as 27 times a day. We have noticed a strong Urine smell around her and her wheel chair. What would case this frequency and smell. She is properly Bathed and cared for. She does have a leaky heart valve and had a stroke six months ago. Thank you
Hello Thanks for query . Your 93 years old mother seems to have UTI secondary to what is called as Senile Urethral Stenosis that results due to generalized atrophy of genital organs which also involved urethra,
This narrowed urethra causes incomplete emptying of bladder resulting into significant amount of urine to remain in bladder what is called as Residual Urine .This residual urine is the source of infection to get UTI .
Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis. 1) Urine routine and culture. 2) Endoscopic examination of bladder(Cystoscopy) with Calibration of urethra .
This should be followed by antibiotics and intermittent catheterization at home to ensure that her bladder is emptied completely .
