Hello:
Polyuria (increased urinating frequency) and urgency can have a lot of causes (as you said, polyuria can be present in
diabetes).
The first thing I suggest to do is a urine exam looking for
urinary tract infection (maybe the first option to rule out). If your urine smells bad, maybe this is the cause and can be treated with antibiotics. The urine exam will show if you have
glucose in your urine. If that is positive, then the cause may be high blood glucose levels. Also we could find proteins in the urine, indicating us there is a kidney problem.
At the same time, I suggest to do some blood tests:
Complete blood count, fasting glucose,
creatinine and urea. They will show us if you have any problem with your glucose (To diagnose diabetes, we need glucose higher than 125 mg/dL in the fasting glucose test). Urea and cretinine are marker of kidney failure and will tell us if you are not eliminating this substances of your system; meanwhile the complete blood count will show if you have anemia as a consequence of kidney failure.
Try consulting with your doctor, maybe you can get done a urine strip before the test I mentioned. Urine strips are a fast screening test for urine infection. They can identify glucose, proteins, nitrites and
leucocytes. That will help your doctor with your approach.
I hope this helps. If you have any doubt before your appointment, let me know.
