What Causes Frequent Runny Nose, cough And Sneezing?

I have had continuous colds since getting the flu shot in October. At least 8 times since October, I get a stuffy, runny nose and coughing. It always begins with sneezing. The colds do go completely away for days, even weeks, yet I get sick time and time again. I am a stay at home mom, I do have 2 children and I help at school, but I have never had this many illnesses. Is this something that I should be concerned with?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Recurrent cold starting with sneezing, runny stuffy nose is a cause of concern. Sneezing indicates allergic cause and once the process starts then the runny nose and stuffiness is a consequence. Post nasal drip and allergy causes coughing too. Since you are a mother of 2 and work in a school, it is natural that you are also exposed to lots of people who give you viral infection on the top of your original problems hence the recurrence in spite of a flu shot.

I would advise you the following:
- Identify the allergens and avoid these at any cost as prevention is better than cure
- Steroid nasal sprays, oral antihistamine and steroid will hold up the progress of your symptoms to have a proper life
- Take an opinion of an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, investigations for any additional treatment

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
