Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi,My husband is suffering from depression. First time it happened in 2012, June and after medication he became absolutely alright. He left his medicines in January 2013 and again in October 2013 his problems started badly. Again the medication was started and he recovered by August 2014.. Since then he was doing well and everyday he was taking Melzap.. Now after 2 years again he is suffering from the same problems.. he become unconscious for long time. Now doctor has prescribed him Escitalopram (10 mg in the morning and 10 mg in the evening) and Melzap (Morning & Evening).. Now he has restlessness and feeling sleepy all the time because of the medicines..Please suggest why is this problems relapsing again and again and should the medicines be changed??
Depressive disorders are mood disorders that occur in episodes. If treatment is not completed then the symptoms tend to relapse. So best way to get his mood stabilised is to take proper treatment.
He is on Escitalopram 10 mg twice a day and this is the probable reason he is having restlessness and sleepiness through out the day. Discuss with his doctor and ask for dose reduction. 20 mg of drug as starting dose is very high. Reduce the dose to 10 mg in morning and 5 mg in afternoon. This will make medicines more tolerable and his symptoms will start improving. Melzap should be taken in higher dose in evening and reduce the morning dose. This will increase his functionality. Please visit his psychiatrist for dose adjustments.
Thanks, Take care
