My 15 year old son has been having at least one, and up to four nosebleeds in the past three days. These nosebleeds have been gushing blood and take forever to stop. He doesn t have any other symptoms. He has not had any injury to his nose or head. It keeps bleeding from the same nostril. He said his nose doesn t feel dry or burn. I am getting a little concerned.
Hi. Your son fits the profile for a condition known as nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (NPA) which typically occurs in young adolescent males and presents with multiple episodes of uncontrollable bleeding.
Based on the high risk profile, I strongly recommend that you show your son to an ENT specialist as soon as possible for an evaluation - Nasal endoscopy to rule out an NPA or adenoids which can also present with similar bleeding. A contrast enhanced CT scan of the nasopharynx may also be necessary. A bleeding profile may be indicated to assess bleeding and clotting time, prothrombin time, APTT and platelet counts.
Once these are ruled out then other causes such as dryness of the nose or septal spurs can be considered for management of the recurrent nasal bleeding.
Hope this information helps. Do let me know if you have any further queries.
