What Causes Frequent Mouth Twitching?

I am a 59 year old woman. The right side of my mouth feels different from the left side. When I smile it feels like my top lip on the right side mouth is crooked but I don t see it in the mirror. I also have a tic or twitch the upper right side of my mouth. My husband asks me if I m nervous because my mouth is twitching often. This has been going on for almost a year. I have not been sick and I recently had yearly physical blood work done from 2 doctors and neither mentioned anything was wrong.

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern.

The symptoms you mention in query is condition known as Hemifacial spasm . There can be many reasons for such symptoms like injury to the facial nerve, a tumor or blood vessel compressing the nerve or Bell’s palsy in case of facial nerve, condition is related to trigeminal neuralgia (compression causes the nerve to misfire making your facial muscles contract ) or neurological disorder like tic .

I would suggest you to :-

- Start facial muscle exercises .

- Start physical therapy of you affected side of face .

- Try te relax yourself by listening to the good musi and practicing yoga and meditation .

- Avoid sun exposure

Consult oral surgeon and neurologist also for proper diagnosis .

Doctor may order CT scan and MRI to find out exact cause .

Doctor may prescribe anticonvulsant drugs ,recommend massage therapy or Behavioral therapy .

Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes,
