hello there
Thanks for writing to HCM
I have read your query and understand concern regarding persistent hiccups.
first of all let me tell you this to put your mind at ease;more than 3/4th of cases presenting with hiccups in the clinic are nothing of serious nature. They are spontaneous, involuntary spasm of the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles(between ribs)
following details would have been helpful:
age and sex, occupation, dietary habits, medical and drug history, history of trauma or surgery, whether you smoke or drink alcohol??
Coming to hiccups as a symptom,
most cases i see are with the ones who eat too much food in a short amount of time without proper chewing and also they end up swallowing too much air.
smoking and
stress also are triggers for hiccups
is your hiccups aggravated by sudden consumption of hot or cold drinks/beverages?
i would suggest you do the following for the hiccups:
-first get a
blood test,renal function test etc
-try natural or simple
home remedies like drinking a glass of water of moderately cold water or holding breath for 10 seconds or even in some people a teaspoon of honey has seen to do some effect
- i would recommend
chlorpromazine 25mg thrice daily for three to four days and see how it works for you, alternatively you can try
baclofen 10mg thrice daily for a week.
Both medicines are effective in many cases
-you may also take a small dose of
gabapentin at night.
do a renal function test and liver function test every three months when you are continuously on these drugs and then resume usage only after opinion of your doctor.
Hope i have clarified your doubt and hope it helps.
Good day and please followup if needed
