What Causes Frequent Episodes Of Balance Issues In A 62 Year Old Man?

Hi, My husband is 62 yrs, old. about 12 years ago he had triple bypass surgery.(no heart damage). within the past 5 years he has had 3 procedures to clear blockages in his leg arteries.(He still smokes). This past year he has lost a drastic amount of weight and stumbles when he walks. He will not find out what is wrong. He says he s dying. Ouch! What would cause him to lose his balance so frequently. sometimes he falls.

Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM
Sorry to hear your husband has balance issues
Balance problems in your husband may be caused by many medical conditions. Some possible causes may include:
-Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
-Meniere's disease
-Migraine
-Acoustic neuroma
-Vestibular neuritis
-Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness
-Orthostatic hypotension
-Cardiovascular disease
-peripheral neuropathy
-Medications
-Certain neurologic conditions like Parkinson's disease
-Ionic imbalances
-And others

I will suggest you see the Doctor for examination and investigation.Tests that may help identify the cause of his problem may include: full blood count, ESR, fasting blood sugar, serum electrolytes, brain scan, ECG and others depending on the diagnostic orientation of the Doctor. In the meantime, i will advise you try the following:
*Balance retraining exercises
*Healthy diet/lifestyle
*If symptoms too severe, your Doctor may prescribe antivertigo medications like tanganil while waiting for results of tests.
Hope this will help
Best regards
